Uh Oh Politics: Awareness

“What? Oh yeah, there’s like an election happening. It’s an important one too like the President or the Supreme Court or something. I guess I should pay attention this time. What?” – like half of America every four years.

Due to this predictable cycle of vague political awareness increasing throughout the country, everyone that can stand to make a few bucks always rushes in to capitalize on the general confusion. I for one think it’s fascinating.

Take this Tostitos ad. Everything about it just screams “Hey you! Politics are so confusing and weird and mean right? Just eat our chips! At least you can figure that out.”

Or look at this Maker’s Mark “Cocktail Party” commercial. It scores some points for using actual political figures James Carville and Mary Matalin making its eventual lack of substance all the more insidious.

Sometimes it just feels like the whole world is turning into this SNL sketch.

Then it’ll all be over and we’ll be back to explosions and pretty ladies as usual.

If you want to dig deeper into this phenomenon, check out this Marmaduke Explained post. It’s more about the economy than politics but the theory is basically the same.
